Tips For A Great Grilled Green Bean Casserole

The grill is the perfect place to bake all of your holiday side dishes.  You can even add some flair to the traditional by getting a little grilled flavor to some of your Thanksgiving mainstays, like the green bean casserole.

Save some space inside by baking your green bean casserole on your grill.  Preheat the grill on high for about 15 minutes (longer if it’s very cold where you are), prepare for indirect medium heat, and bake it according to your recipe. I like to cook green beans in a preheated Weber grill basket to caramelize them before putting them in my casserole.

If you aren’t following a recipe, then the questions of the crunchy fried onions arises.  When do you add them to the casserole?  If you prepare your casserole ahead of time and add the crunchy onions, they’ll be mushy by the time you bake it.

If you put the crunchy onions on when you put the casserole in to bake, the onions get burnt before the green bean casserole is warmed through.  I’ve found that if you wait until the last 10 to 15 minutes of baking, they brown nicely without getting too burnt, and they get a nice, crisp crunch to them.
