The Summit Charcoal Grill - It Has Finally Arrived!

The Summit Charcoal Grill - It Has Finally Arrived!

It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you today and unveil the newest member of the Weber family, the Summit® charcoal grill!  After several years of testing and development thru hundreds of hours of lab and field work, we are so excited to finally share it with everyone.

What is the Summit® charcoal grill?

It is the evolution of charcoal grilling.  We have taken the greatest benefits of three of our best products, the Original 22" Kettle™, the Performer®, and our Smokey Mountain Cooker™ smoker and have combined them into one exceptional product.  The new Summit® charcoal grill takes the guesswork out of charcoal grilling and brings our consumer the very best in design, functionality, and performance.

What makes the Summit® charcoal grill so special?

It has some very unique features only found on this product.  Starting with a double-walled air-insulated porcelain enamel lid and bowl.  The air acts as an insulator keeping warm air in and cold air out.  It also comes with a new and innovative lid damper, that acts like all other Weber lid dampers, with the addition of a hinge, allowing it to flip open acting similar to a built in chimney starter.  This helps light your fuel quickly and easily.

The lid thermometer is the largest one Weber has ever offered that now includes key grilling temperature zone indicators further eliminating any guesswork at the grill.  Inside, the large 24" hinged stainless steel Gourmet BBQ System™ cooking grate allows the option to use a variety of Gourmet BBQ System™ cookware pieces including a wok, griddle, sear grate, pizza stone, or poultry roaster giving you unlimited versatility and options at the grill.

A new and innovative hinged diffuser plate is included and is used for low and slow applications.  It's made of two layers of durable stainless steel that have an air gap between the layers helping to regulate the heat inside of the kettle.  A new smoke/low-and-slow vent setting located on the ash ring sets the stage for extremely long smoke times.  Just "set it and forget it".  And with the addition of gas assist, lighting charcoal is a breeze, allowing you to be up and running and ready to grill in just 20 minutes.  What does all of this mean for you?  Power, flexibility, versatility, confidence, and unbelievable food!

The Summit® charcoal grill comes in two models, the Summit® charcoal grill, and the Summit® charcoal grilling center.  The grilling center includes everything that the Summit® charcoal grill has with the addition of a built-in stainless steel side table, perfect for placement of food or for prep space. It also has a large sealable Char-Bin™ storage container suitable for holding a 20-lb bag of fuel, a diffuser plate storage area located underneath the grilling center, and a removable basket that can help tote a few things to and from the kitchen!

We have also launched a number of new charcoal accessories including specific covers for each model, a new charcoal rake, an expansion grilling rack, and a large rib rack.  To find a retailer near you that carries the Summit charcoal grill and these accessories, please click here.

So why does one need the Summit® charcoal grill?

I am fortunate enough to own several Weber grills, including a Kettle™, a Performer®, and a Smokey Mountain Cooker™ smoker.  They are all wonderful products that I use all of the time.  I also have a Genesis® and Summit® gas grill.  Like many others, I tend to use the gas grills during the week, and my charcoal grills on the weekend, simply due to time and convenience.  This grill gives you the opportunity to use charcoal every day because of how fast it gets you up and running, similar to a gas grill.

I've had the privilege of eating everything off of this grill including steaks, ribs, shoulder, brisket, fish, pizza, whole chickens, vegetables, and cakes!  (Yes, cake!).  Everything has been amazing and some of the best food I've ever had off of a Weber.  As our Grill Master Kevin Kolman states, you feel invincible on this grill.  It gives you confidence like no other.

I've only highlighted a few of the key features of this grill.  We have a lot more information about the Summit® charcoal grill on our website.  We will post some incredible videos from Mike Lang showing the versatility and power of this product.  I encourage you to take a few minutes and watch these and get familiar with this product.

Once you decide to purchase this product, please make sure you register this grill.  Once registered, you will receive a free beautiful hard covered Summit® charcoal grill cookbook where every recipe was specifically developed for this product.  It is an exceptional gift from us and the recipes are outstanding.

Today is a special day for Weber.  George Stephen would be so proud of this grill and where we have taken charcoal grilling from where it all started in 1952.  George may be gone, but his spirit certainly lives on in the Summit® charcoal grill.  We are confident you will all agree!

Any plans for a rotisserie accessory? I think that would be the seal the deal for me on a purchase.

Tom T

Thanks in advance for your input.

I've seen this thing in action and it's awesome! I did think it was priced just a bit high. But it is priced competitively against a traditional Kamado, and I actually think the weber is much more versatile.

The model that I checked out came with the side table and I believe it retails for $2000. For that much money I was surprised that it looks and feels cheap (that said I think it can stand up to the weather). The grill is gorgeous, just the side table. Are you aware of any aftermarket folks who could possibly make a better looking side table?

Mark Fenne

Hi Mark! We are so glad to hear you got to experience the Summit Charcoal Grill first hand and were pleased with what you saw! The side table is made of heavy-duty stainless steel and we're not aware of any aftermarket items for the grill. Thanks!

Daniel S

I've only had Summit for a couple weeks but have used it quiet a bit. It is amazing!

How long does it take to receive Summit charcoal grill a cookbook?

Mark Fenne

Hi Daniel! Congratulations on your new Summit charcoal grill! We are so happy to hear you're loving it as much as we do. The cookbooks have started shipping so you should receive yours any day now. In the meantime, check out the Weber blog for videos and recipes specific to the Summit charcoal grill. Thanks and grill on! - Mark

Where have you guys been all these years? I bought a Big Green Egg a few years ago in part because my Weber Performer didn't have the features of the new Summit Charcoal grill. When we downsized last year, I sold the Performer and kept the Egg. Our new place doesn't have room for two grills, so I'll be keeping the egg for now.

I owned my Performer from 1993 until 2015. During that time, Weber didn't make any improvements to their charcoal grills. They seemed more focused on their gas grills.

Even though I'm keeping the Egg for now, I'll take a serious look at the Summit if anything ever happens to it. Good job, you guys!

Mark Fenne

Hi Wallis! Thanks for being a longtime Weber fan and thank you for the kind words about the Summit charcoal grill!

Hello, when can we buy this fantastic grill in Spain?

Paul P

Hello Mark

Just returned from viewing the new "Summit Charcoal Grill". I must say it's a beauty,
something I've been looking for such a long time to find. I opened the hinged lid right
away. Great retention spring to keep lid up. The opening is nice and large, no problems
with loading and unloading of charcoal and items to be grilled, roasted or smoked!!
The construction with double walls, wow, what I would given to have had that feature
on my old "Performer" charcoal grill. And the ability to really control air flow, the nice deep bowl for the fire, the fire diffuser, the two position grilling areas, just outstanding.
Nice storage container for charcoal and the propane igniter, excellent!!!

Now, why in the world would you use "cheap" plastic wheels when every other detail is
so well thought out???

Even so, I have put this Barbeque on my wish list and I will replace the offending wheels

Paul P.

Mark Fenne

Hi Paul! Thanks so much for your kind words about the Summit charcoal grill. It's something you have to see and experience to really appreciate. We spent a lot of time on the details so we are thrilled to hear the positive feedback and I will pass on your comments about the wheels to the product team. Thanks for being a Weber fan!

Angelo C

I love this. I am in the market for a Kamado and I will certainly have to consider this. It does seem expensive. I have 2 questions.

Are thee any plans to offer a Stainless Steel model? Seems like that would make sense given that this is a Summit Series Product.

I am in NJ, zip code 08857. I can't seem to find a local dealer that is even aware of this product. Can you point me to a dealer that might have a floor model for me to look at in person? Thanks!

Mark Fenne

Hi Angelo! We're so glad to hear you're interested in the Summit charcoal grill! As of now, we don't have any plans to offer it in a stainless steel version but we'll pass your suggestion on to our product team. Plug your zip code into our dealer locator (link below) and you'll find a dealer near you. Thanks and grill on!

i must admit to some initial sticker shock; but having seen this gorgeous beast in action on Saturday morning at #DicksonBBQ Toronto, I have made my mind up that it will be added to my stable of Q's.

Its extremely well thought out and is really lacking in nothing.

The grill real estate is stupendous and I understand why they would use the hashtag #grillofalifetime.

Now all i need to do is convince my wife how having a 4th BBQ makes total sense.

Mark Fenne

Hi Ray! We're so happy to hear you're as excited about the Summit charcoal grill as we are. It really has to be seen to be believed and we're thrilled you got the chance to see it in action. Once you get it, be sure to send us pictures of what you're grilling! Thanks and grill on!

Thomas W

I am a huge fan of weber products but it seems over priced. What makes this grill worth the money? It looks cool but it's lacking a lifetime warranty that I can get with any kamado manufacturer for a similar price. If it had a lifetime warranty I would be interested. Also, why metal for the diffuser and not lava stone or another material?

Why use air to insulate it? Why no insulating material inside it? Does it use lump charcoal or briquettes? Can I use either fuel? How many hours can it cook for without refueling? Like say at a temp of 275 at the grate.
How about the outer shell of grill does it get hot to the touch? Do you have to burp it like a kamado?

I want to like it but what makes it better than a kamado in a similar price range.

Mark Fenne

Hi Thomas, you ask some really good questions here. The Summit charcoal grill is so much more than just another grill. It is the evolution of charcoal grilling and smoking, and it's loaded with innovative features and unprecedented temperature control and responsiveness. Check out the link below for more detailed information about the Summit charcoal grill and thanks for being a Weber fan!

Update: Tom Fuller, Director of Global Product Development for Charcoal, has answered some of the questions posed in the original comment.
Warranty: The Summit charcoal grill comes with the same great warranty as other Weber products backed up by the industry-leading Customer Service.
Why metal for the diffuser plate? Based on our internal testing, the material choice for the diffuser plate provided us the best results and will withhold over time.
Why air insulated? Based on our internal testing, air provided us the best results.
Why didn't we use insulating material? Don’t need it. Could corrode over time.
Lump charcoal or briquettes? You can use either. Additional information can be found in the owner's manual.
How many hours can it cook without refueling? Depends on the fuel load, but we have seen 8-16 straight hours.
Does the outer shell of the grill get hot? Yes, similar to any other charcoal grill.
Do you have to burp it like a kamado? Users should always take precaution when opening any grill to prevent backflash.
