26" kettle grill review after nearly 5 years of use...

I was in love with my grill the day I got it- I'm a Chicago boy, how could I not be... Let's face it, that smooth black finish and the super-sized 26" instead of everyone else with their 22" was cool. I have always been, and continue to be a Weber fan. I believe you pay for the quality you get and the the quality is reflected in the feel of the product. Despite my overall disappointment in this particular product, my go to when I purchase a gas grill within the next 6 months will likely be a Weber.

My 26" kettle was never "just right". The lid didn't fit as snug as my 22" and 18", and my air vents on the bottom of the unit just didn't seal all the way. Never the less I continued on. With the change of seasons in the Midwest, my grill made a few bumpy rides up and down the deck. Truth be told, it only got closer to the door so I didn't freeze while cooking all year round, but this was up or down a 5 1/2" drop in deck height. After the second trip down the drop, I noticed the legs where they meet the wheels is bent. Okay, the grill isn't level any more, I throw a brick under the wheel to level it out. A couple more trips and both legs are bent.

I own responsibility for the rough trips up or down the deck drop for sure! My complaint with Weber is 2 fold.

#1. I honestly feel like the legs are a little light for the bulk of my grill, and in hindsight I'm not surprised they bent under the load.

#2. Try finding a part number on the web site, or on the schematic, or in the manual for the grill. Yes, it is nearly 6 years old and I still have the manual. No where is a part number to order. I'll try customer service next, but as I prefer to just handle things off the web, finding a part and being able to order it would be nice.

I love the cooking area of my grill, but with the bigger size it seems the overall product went down a bit from what I was used to. Lastly, my review may come after 5 years of ownership, but these issues started from go, and the legs bent around a year in. I obviously wasn't too upset in the past, just continually disappointed followed by elation with every meal. I realize it is a mixed bag...

The Family Kettle

If you have a family like I do this is the Kettle for you! I use the 26 as primary and the 22 as secondary and or for veggies. Most always here it's a multi grill/smoker night anyhow and for a family of 5 this is the grill for you. I would love to see more accessories for the 26 but hopefully it will happen in the future. Bottom line, it's a Weber!! They are the best of the best and you wont be disappointed in the 26. Grill on and enjoy!!

Awesome!!

I love this grill!! I've got an older 22" Kettle that I love but the "Big Boy", as I call it, has taken it's place. This thing is huge and I love the extra room, it's so handy. I cook for just my wife and me but we can cook two steaks off the heat while my cast-iron skillet of asparagus is directly on the heat. Once the asparagus is done I can sear my steaks while the asparagus is off the heat staying warm and take them both off at the same time. We've done beer in the rear chickens, wings, tri-tips, and salmon with a pouch of potatoes with room to spare. I'm going to do a rack of ribs soon to try out its smoking capabilities. It won't replace my 18" WSM but I believe it will be a good smoker for a rack of ribs or one butt. My wife and I grill at least three times a week if not more even during the winter. I feel bad neglecting my 22" but I'll use it for hot dogs and hamburgers. Anytime someone asks I will recommend the 26" kettle every time. Now my sights are on the new Summit charcoal, I'm a Weber fanatic!!!

Terrance R big 26.75 Weber Kettle grill

I already own a 22.5 WSM and 330 genisis propane gas grill. I've use it about 5 times i guess this thing cooks good I'm learning how to really control the temperature. I use it for the 4 July this year on a brisket and it come out good nice smoke ring. I have a chimney starter i filled it up and cook 8 hrs on one load of Kingsford charcoals. It seems to be pretty fuel efficient so far so good. I'm really glad i added this weber grill to my collection. After buying these 3 weber grills i want one more weber grill and that's the 18 inch jumbo joe i hope my wife don't get mad. She should be fine with it because she never complaints when that hood meat comes off the grills Thanks to the Weber Company for another great product.

Great Space!

I've owned Kettle and Gas Grills for as long as I can remember,Two and half years ago I came across this 26" grill on this web site. I looked up who carried it in my area and found a Hardware Store an hour away from me. It's been the best Grill I've bought yet! It's so convenient to cook two to three Tri-Tips at one time. I use the snake method for my charcoal cooking, which cooks low and slow.

I recommend that Weber revisits it's design and make the legs a little more stable.

Great Overall Grill

I own a performer, at times I wished that it had a bigger cooking area. The Ranch Kettle was to big, then 2 and half years ago I came across the 26 inch Weber. I bought it and have been very Happy with it. It is very handy when Holidays come around and you cook for a Family gathering, I was able to cook 2 Tri-Tips and some chicken on it.

If you can afford it, skip the smaller ones. Here's why...

I bought this grill's first iteration in ca. 1980. It was terrific for smoking whole turkeys and ribs, because you could keep the meat on one side, and the charcoal and wood chips/chunks on the other side (with or without using the charcoal baskets) to get low-temp "oven" cooking.

After years and years of use (until 1997) including taking the legs off and hauling it to Baja for beach barbecuing fresh-caught fish, and driving the heat to insane levels for steaks that basically burned off the wood lid handle and sagged the grate, and not being able to find a replacement, but mostly due to moving to a new home that had a wood deck, for which the old open-pan ash catcher was not safe, I gave it away and bought a 22-incher with composite handles, and the closed-pot ash catcher. I currently use a Performa 22, and an old New Braunfels smoker for slow cooking with one door hinge out of commission, still usable, but hobbling..

I've been looking at Kamados, but I think I'll probably get a Weber 26. For sentimental reasons...like smoking 3-4 slabs of ribs for 5 hours, then quick-searing them directly over charcoal.

The last grill you wil ever need

I have waited almost 6 years before purchasing this grill. It was worth it. I can cook everything from ribs to pies on this grill and it will come out great! Don't be shy about putting your cast iron on this grill. It will only expand your options and will make you love this grill even more!!

Grill or smoke--your choice

The 26.75 is a great size for smoking or grilling. Use the amount of charcoal you need for the cook and you won't go wrong. You don't have to fill up the kettle. I've slow cooked lots of meats (ribs, butts, chickens, beef) and I've grilled lots. Very versatile. Forget the egg thingy, this is the all purpose, real fire cooker for any grilling/barbecuing enthusiast.
