Introduction of a new safer LPG fitting for connection to LPG gas bottles in Australia
You might have heard on the grill vine a change is coming to the way Weber barbecues connect to gas bottles. From April 1st, 2022, the Australian Gas Standard has adjusted the regulations to adopt a newer and safer hose connection for LPG barbecues and gas appliances.
The current connection is commonly referred to as a Type 21 or POL fitting. The future of Australian gas appliances sees a change over to the new Type 27 or Leisure Cylinder Connection - LCC27. The new connection will be in effect for barbecues manufactured after the 1st of April 2022, however current floor stock may have the Type21 fitting and can still be sold.
This change will take place over 10 years, and by 2032 the Type 21 will be officially obsolete. Please refer to your Weber Owner's Manual for when the hose should be replaced on your barbecue.

Why the Change?
The new Type 27 or Leisure Cylinder Connection - LCC27 cylinder valve significantly reduces the chance of incorrectly connecting the hose to the gas bottle allowing gas to escape and causing a potential fire risk.
Some of the benefits of the new Type 27 Connections include:
- The cylinder valve incorporates a 'check valve' that will only enable gas to flow when a gas-tight connection is made. This will ensure gas cannot flow from the cylinder even if the hose has been disconnected and the valve handle has been left in the open position.
- The connection is a large-diameter right-handed thread that is able to be made without the use of tools. Unlike the POL which caused many sore hands when over-tightened accidentally.
- The new appliance or 'pigtail connection' does not include rubber o-rings or bull-nose seals, which often become damaged or missing. All perishable rubber seals are located within the body of the gas valve.
- In the event, the connection is exposed to a fire. The connection incorporates a thermal fuse that will melt when exposed to heat. This allows the internal check valve to close and shut off the gas flow.
What is Changing?
THE CURRENT CONNECTION
Type 21 (POL) fitting.

4.5 kg and 9 kg gas bottles currently in Australia use this valve type and hose connection.
THE NEW CONNECTION
Type 27 (Leisure Cylinder Connection - LCC27) fitting.

Gas bottles are to undergo a phaseout over a 10-year period which began on 1st April 2021.
Do I need to replace my hose?
The new Type 27 Gas Bottle Valve is backward compatible, meaning regardless of which type of hose you receive with your barbecue, you will be able to use the Weber hose on the new Type 27 Gas Bottle Valve.
In the instance where you might receive a new Type 27 hose with your barbecue, but still have the Type 21 Gas Bottle Valve, we recommend updating your Gas Bottle to the new Valve Type to ensure compatibility.

When is the change over/phasing in happening?
For Gas Bottles
Gas bottles are certified for 10 years of use and so will undergo a phaseout over a 10-year period which began on 1st April 2021.
You will find that swap-and-go and hardware suppliers are already changing over the valve on the Type 21 Gas Bottles to the Type 27 Gas Bottles that are near their end-certified date and require re-certifying. Any bottles manufactured since 2013 can continue to use the existing Type 21 valve until they need re-certifying.
For Gas Appliances
Production of gas appliances changes over to the new Type 27 appliance connection by the 1st of April 2022 (fixed date) which applies to PRODUCTION ONLY not the sell date. There is no fixed date for existing products on the sales floor or in warehouses to change over.
Weber Australia has scheduled our production to start using the new LCC27 appliance connection as of 15th March 2022. Depending on our production, shipping schedule, and stock on hand you will begin to see products appearing on the shop floor in the second half of 2022. Please refer to your Weber Owner's Manual for when the hose should be replaced.
