Grill Academy - Top TipFood sticking to the grill?

We’ve all experienced trying to lift our steak, burger patties or chicken pieces from the barbecue grill, only to leave that delicious crispy surface stuck to the cooking grill – gah!!!

This is a common problem that we hear about from guests at the Weber Grill Academy – but it doesn’t have to be that way!

One of our resident Grill Experts, Adam, has provided his top tips to help avoid food sticking to your barbecue grill.

Ensure your cooking surface is clean and smoking hot

The best way to achieve this is to pre-heat your barbecue on a high heat for 10 to 15 minutes, and then to give the hot grill a brush down with a wire grill brush.

Lightly oil the food (never the barbecue grill!)

Not only will this help to create a physical barrier between the food you’re cooking and the grill, but it will also help your seasoning stick to your food. Avoid sugary marinades that are bound to stick like glue to the grill.

Give your food a pat-down

By gently patting your food down onto the grill with the back of your barbecue tongs, you ensure even contact with the cooking surface, and kick start that caramelisation process.

Turn your food to a new position on the grill

Turn your food only once, halfway through the cooking time, and place onto an unused area of the grill for maximum heat on the second side. Don’t forget to give it another pat down with your tongs!

If your food still sticks to the grill…

If you try to lift your food, and find it’s not lifting easily, it’s better to close the lid and cook for a further 30 seconds before trying again. Trying to lift the food before the first side has fully sealed and caramelised will result in leaving half your food stuck to the cooking surface!
