Sr. Packaging Engineer (Packaging Design & Innovation)

Summary:

This position is responsible for the design and technical development of packaging solutions for Weber’s new and existing grill and accessory products globally. The Packaging Engineer will partner cross-functionally to ensure seamless execution of structural packaging design, out of box experience, design optimization and sustainability measures. Individual will be responsible for detailed documentation of specifications and material management data to successfully deliver product/packaging commercialization. This role will report into the Director of Packaging Design & Innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proactively drive front end innovation/renovation development efforts, creating a holistic approach for packaging design that delights the consumer and enables competitive advantage for Weber’s global grill and accessory business.
  • Cultivate a cross-functional partnership between product development and engineering, project management, product management, marketing, operations, and supply chain helping to establish a seamless process for defining package requirements and adhering to product development timelines and deliverables.
  • Develop packaging bill of materials and maintain accuracy in the material management system.
  • Ensures project deliverables are defined in partnership with other functions, and timelines are met and in line with budgetary requirements for all packaging initiatives.
  • Partner closely with the Consumer Insights team, infusing consumer feedback and insights into the packaging design process.
  • Establish partnerships with key suppliers and vendors, working to build long-standing relationships and cost-effective packaging solutions.
  • Partner cross-functionally to prepare cost estimates and samples for the product management, marketing, R&D, and Supply Chain/Operations teams.
  • Thoroughly review all packaging specifications before they are sent to suppliers, ensuring all packaging solutions are compliant with international regulatory package requirements and adhere to operations standards for distribution and warehousing performance and functionality.
  • Partner on the art approval process with external suppliers and key internal stakeholders ensuring a proper sign-off on packaging specifications and a successful print execution.
  • Support investigation and analysis of packaging performance issues working in partnership with Quality, Supply Chain, and Marketing to ensure solutions are proposed and quickly mitigated for new and unexpected design issues.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging or a closely related program
  • 5 to 10 year’s work experience in Packaging Engineering
  • Knowledge and expertise with a wide range of packaging systems and materials used in the creation of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging
  • Possesses a strong knowledge of packaging material science, design for manufacturing, and six sigma principles and tools
  • Demonstrated ability to design and interpret distribution simulations, lab test and plant trials
  • Strong PC skills: MS Office, SolidWorks, Tops/CAPE, SAP
  • Adaptable and flexible with the ability to work well under pressure and in challenging situations
  • Strong business acumen and attention to detail with a consistent record of delivering results
  • Consumer goods packaging design and development is considered a key advantage
