Why Won't My Gas Grill Get Hot?

So you’ve just brought home your brand new Weber gas grill. You’ve put it together, found the perfect spot on the patio to set it up, and now it’s time to fire it up for its maiden voyage!

But what’s this?!? It’s not really getting very hot.

The situation above is one of the most common ones that we hear about, and many times there’s a very quick and simple fix for it. Often, a new grill owner will mistakenly set the knobs to low thinking they are setting them to high.

There are 4 basic settings for the control knobs on most Weber gas grills. Low, medium, high, and off. The "start" position that you use to light the grill is also the "high" position. The further you turn the knobs the lower you are setting the grill.

Genesis II LX models are a bit unique and have 6 settings. Low, medium, high, high +, Start, and off, but it’s still possible to set the grill to low while thinking you are setting it to high.

So, if your brand new Weber gas grill doesn’t seem to be getting hot double check your knob settings to make sure you aren’t accidentally turning it down to low. If the problem doesn’t seem to be related to how you’re setting the control knobs, and you have a propane model, you might be in what we call “bypass”. Check out my blog on bypass here.

We always encourage everyone to read their owner’s manual, and even though we include one with every grill we know that not everyone reads them. The excitement of getting right to grilling can over power the best of us, but do yourself a favor and check out all of the great info we’ve put into the owner’s manual for you! If you can’t find your manual, click here to find it online.
