Dangerous Glass Reinforced Nylon Handle! Is mine defective?

I bought a new Smokey Joe 14" basic model to replace a 20-year old one as I was moving out-of-state. I was using the new one for the past few months without a problem. However, I recently bought the Weber coal Chimney Starter and tried it last night. The coals heated up very quickly and I grilled meat with the lid off. Then I put slices of bread w/cheese on top on the grill and put the lid on for about a minute (to melt the cheese on the bread). When I went to take off the lid, it was so hot that I scalded my hand and instinctively flung the grill cover away. It could have hit my feet/legs and I could have had serious burns. I've written to Weber about this on this website and will wait to hear their response.

In the meantime, please be aware that this is an issue so no one gets injured.

Give me the old wooden handles on the old versions. I still have my original grill that was a gift by one of the founders of this company.

Love my new Smokey Joe!!!

I am really amazed at how nice this little grill is! My girlfriend and I love going to the beach with the kids and grilling out. Last year we used a propane grill but I did not really like it. I like cooking over charcoal. I wanted a small charcoal grill but the ones I saw were lacking in quality...until I saw this grill!!! I have always admired Weber grills and saw this one for around $30. I had to have it! My girlfriend and I were on a trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan and went to the beach and cooked up some brats with this little bad boy. They turned out very nice. The quality on this little grill is amazing for the price! Just like the bigger Weber's only portable. The other night, we got some chicken that we wanted to do up on the grill (4 lbs of legs and thights) and this grill was big enough to cook all of it at once! The chicken turned out amazing and was better than the chicken that I cook on my big charcoal grill of another brand. We both agreed that this little Smokey Joe turned out the best BBQ chicken we had ever eaten...anywhere! I might have to sell my big grill as this grill uses very little charcoal, is very good at controlling the heat and can cook enough food for the whole tribe and saves allot of space on the deck! When this little champ eventually wears out I will most definitely purchase another! HIGHLY recomend!

Small but mighty.

My husband and I have owned this grill for about 15 years and wow we loved it. We are only now forced to replace it because a leg rusted off. But hey it served its purpose. We have used this grill at least twice a week in season and about once every two out of season. The cooking is great you really can't beat a charcoal grill. We are sad to see it go but at the same time we needed a bigger grill as our family has expanded and trust me we will go with another weber but just a larger model. The only this I would recommend is a way to move the grill once it's hot. We placed it on a rolling cart out side so we could move it away from little ones.

Clever design, good results!

I use this for the two of us on weekends. The shape and venting system steers the heat to wherever you need it. A hockey puck thermometer gave me 500F with the vents open, that will grill anything, I even cooked a pizza on a stone in there. Dialling it back with the top vent and stacking the coals to one side makes it serviceable for roasting. I also toss in wood chips for a bit of smoke. The catch pan below is great for safety, on a wooden picnic table.

A couple of things to improve on: put a wire bail or handle on it to move it when charcoaled up and hot. Collapsible legs would make it easier to stow in a canoe or car.

The heavy steel construction and lid make it outperform any Hibachi cooker, it keeps hot and is pretty well wind proof. I replaced my camping Hibachi with this, way better, burns less charcoal per meal.

The design and construction are a gold standard for little charcoal BBQs.

Great Grill Great Price!

I have had 3 Weber Grills over the years. They are strong and very well priced compared to other grills that are similar. I have just purchased the 2nd Smokey Joe to have at the deer camp. I am a firm believer that if you purchase a Weber product you will not be disappointed.

Great little grill

My Brother gave me this for a birthday present, the Wife and I love it.
I have a Performer, an 18 1/2" Gold, and an 18 1/2" Weber Smokey Mountain, now with the Smokey Joe Silver I have a grill for all occasions.
It doesn't need much charcoal, The Compact Rapidfire Chimney Starter I had for the smoker gives the perfect amount of fuel.
It's small size makes cleanup a snap, so the after dinner cleanup is quick and easy.
We've been using this little power house more and more during the week for quick burgers, chicken breasts, and dogs after work.
It's the perfect addition to my grill family, and a gift that keeps on giving.

Little smokie

We have a close friend who has had one for a long time so we thought we would buy us one. I'm not pleased with ours because when you cook it has a vent on top and one on bottom and if you cover it with the lid then no air gets through for cross ventilation. Our friends have one with the vent on the sides and top and the handle locks in place which ours does not and cooks vey good.

Smokey Joe Smokes 'Em All!

Since my wife and I are only cooking for two most of the time, we bought a Smokey Joe to use instead of firing up the big Weber Kettle we have. We paid a paltry $29 for this little jewel, and it is the best $29 we have spent in a long time. Burgers and steaks have the most amazing flavor from bathing in the smoke. No fires, and perfect food every time.
