Still no cover available

The Ranch Kettle is the single most versatile grill Weber offers IMO. If I were allowed to only have one Weber product, this would be it - without question! It can be used as a grill or a smoker. The most important thing to realize is if you have never seen one of these grills in person, they aren't as big as they are hyped up to be, (which is a good thing). It's only about 10 inches wider than a Weber 26.75 kettle grill. People are under the impression that unless you are cooking for 50 people, then it's too much grill - not true.

Using the Weber charcoal rails, I create a hot zone on the left 1/3 area of the cooking grate for direct cooking. The center 1/3 of the cooking grate is for indirect cooking, and the right 1/3 area is a warming area for food that is already cooked. You can also create 2 hot zones on the left 1/3 and right 1/3 area of the cooking grate with the center 1/3 used for indirect cooking. This set up is perfect for laying out big slabs of ribs right down the middle of the cooking grate or 2-3 whole packer briskets down the center or 4-6 pork butts.

The other thing I love about this grill is that it is on a heavy four wheeled cart with locking casters, no wobbly tripod legs. Plus, being on a four wheeled cart, it sits up at a more comfortable, higher cooking height.

Now for the bad: Number one complaint for me regarding this grill is that Weber still REFUSES to offer a cover for this grill! Weber offers a cover for every single one of their grills except this one. WHY? This thing cost about $1300 new. You have this amount of money tied up in it and yet there is no cover offered to protect your investment? Weber has been selling Ranch Kettles since the 1950's and they still do not offer a cover for it after 60+ years. Also, given the large size of this piece of equipment, most folks won't be able to store it inside their garage which means 99% of all Ranch kettles are sitting outside getting rained on. Little $29 Weber Smokey Joes get a cover, but a $1300 RK doesn't warrant a cover being offered? Someone please explain this logic to me?

Another drawback for this grill is that the cooking grate needs to come in three separate sections like the cooking grate on a Summit gas grill. When you need to lift the cooking grate out in order to clean the ash down below, you have to lift this big, heavy, cumbersome cooking grate all at once. A three piece cooking grate would be much better due to the size and weight of the grate.

Finally, there's one other point that many people don't realize about the Ranch Kettle grill. Weber makes the smaller "Weber Q" gas and electric grills. These grills come with a handle light that mounts under the bolts that connect the handle to the lid. What many people don't realize is that these handle lights also PERFECTLY FIT under the handle of the Ranch Kettle. The light automatically turns on when the lid is raised and turns off when the lid is closed. These lights should be included with all new Ranch Kettles IMO.

YES!!!

Got an excellent deal at Lowe's.
Was able to get proficient over the years and really enjoy entertaining for large groups.

People come over and are amazed when they see it.

Would really like it if parts and accessories were more readily available for it. Otherwise I am very satisfied.

The Ultimate Grill

I purchased my Ranch Grill over 20 years ago, when we were putting on horse shows and used it for a concession. After we stopped doing that line of work, the grill served us well and was used all the time for parties, and particularly for large events.

So here are the points of relevance from my perspective...

1. If you are not a serious "Grillmeister," and you don't have parties in excess of 6 people on a regular basis, then get the 26" grill and you'll be perfectly happy. If, on the other hand, you have to barbeque for more than 6, and/or also have a mixture of chicken, beef, pork, seafood, veggies on all at the same time, then this is the grill for you.

2. If you want a grill that you'll never have to replace, and that will be with you for decades, this is the grill for you.

3. If you want a grill that despite its size, can be handled by a teenager, and is perfectly designed for its purpose, this is the grill for you.

4. Finally, if you want to grill knowing that no matter what your neighbor drives, how big his house is, how smart his kids are or how beautiful his wife is, he'll envy you this grill until he gets one himself, then this is the grill for you! ;-)

Final notes: I saw a criticism of the wheel in one of the other reviews. So here's my take on the issue. In my experience, this truly is the best grill ever manufactured, however, the front wheels are inadequately designed and should really be replaced with something as sturdy and industrial as the rest of the grill. I had both the front wheels break over the years, and simply replaced them with a 2x4 that balanced the grill out across the wheels. Nevertheless, it didn't diminish my warm thoughts about this grill.
Also, when eating at the Weber restaurant in Chicago metro, I saw that they also used this grill, but they had a separate level they could put food on. I would have liked to see that accessory offered to non-commercial users as well.

Big Boy!

My first outing with this Big Boy was to cook for 30+ people. I guava smoked a large bison meatloaf, grilled about 10#’s of veggies, 10 shrimp skewers, and over 18#’s of rib eye steaks almost at the same time! No one had to wait for their food and everything came out perfect! I’m already planning the next event which will be an “Endless Summer” clambake that I know will be a breeze because of the amount of cooking real-estate the Weber Kettle has.

Couple of things that lower the rating: 1. The grill was delivered with a defective wheel which keeps falling off when I roll it into storage; 2. There is no factory cover for this beast but I found an outdoor patio table cover that fits almost perfect from Lowe’s; 3. The price is a high even though the grill is huge. You can buy two 26” Weber grills for much less but I knew what the price was when I ordered it so that one is on me.

Finally, I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends because they all got to see it and they know where they can come to borrow one, not to mention they don’t have the storage space for something this big!
